AI Basics

Begin with the broad category, then narrow the question to the particular system, task, information source, and consequence.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is a broad category of computer systems that use statistical, machine-learning, or related computational methods to perform tasks such as classifying, ranking, recommending, predicting, recognizing patterns, generating material, or assisting decisions.

AI is not one machine, one company, or one personality. A spam filter, route estimator, recommendation system, fraud alert, speech recognizer, and chatbot may all use different forms of AI. Not every automated system uses AI, and not every AI system is generative.

What is generative AI?

Generative AI produces new material in response to instructions. Depending on the product, it may generate text, images, audio, video, code, summaries, plans, translations, or other outputs.

A generated answer is assembled from learned patterns, the current prompt and conversation, supplied files, and any tools the product is permitted to use. A plausible sentence can be useful without being verified.

How is a chatbot different from a search engine?

A traditional search engine mainly locates and ranks existing pages or records. A generative chatbot constructs a response. Modern products may combine both functions, so the boundary is not always visible.

Ask whether the particular chatbot used a current search, supplied document, database, calculator, or only its existing conversational context. Do not infer current web access from a polished tone.

Can every AI chatbot access the current internet?

No. Capabilities vary by product, account, settings, location, and date. Some chatbots can search the web or use connected tools. Others cannot. A tool may also search only when asked or only for certain tasks.

Ask: “Did you use a current external source for this answer? Show me which source, its date, and the exact claim it supports.” Then open the source yourself.
Does AI think, feel, or understand like a person?

Conversational systems can produce language that sounds caring, reflective, humorous, or self-aware. That behavior alone does not establish human-like consciousness, feelings, lived experience, personal belief, or moral authority.

Questions about machine consciousness remain scientifically and philosophically contested. This course does not require a final answer to that debate. Its safety rule is narrower: evaluate observable capabilities, evidence, system behavior, and consequences without treating conversational style as proof of an inner life.

Why does AI sometimes “make things up”?

A language model is designed to produce a plausible continuation, not to independently prove every statement. It can therefore produce an incorrect date, invented quotation, nonexistent citation, false explanation, or unsupported conclusion in fluent language.

NIST uses the term confabulation for confidently presented erroneous or false content. People also use “hallucination.” Whatever word is used, the practical rule is the same: fluency is not verification.

Why can the same prompt produce different answers?

Generative models often have several plausible ways to continue a response. Product settings, model updates, prior conversation, connected tools, and probabilistic generation can all influence the result.

Repeatability matters when a task is important. Save the source material, prompt, date, product or model identity when available, and final human corrections. Do not assume yesterday’s answer will be reproduced exactly tomorrow.

Privacy and Safe Use

Share less, use placeholders, check the current product, and keep a non-AI route available.

Do I need an AI account or a computer to use this course?

No account is required to read the course. Workshops can also use printed examples, one facilitator device, paired activities, or paper-based prompt planning. A participant may observe instead of typing.

Some optional hands-on activities require access to a particular tool, but account creation should be disclosed before the activity and should not become the price of belonging in the class.

Are my chatbot conversations private?

Do not assume so. Data handling varies by provider, product, account type, administrator, settings, connected applications, and current privacy policy. Conversations may be stored, reviewed, retained, used for product improvement, or made available to an organization administrator under some arrangements.

Review the current official privacy, history, memory, model improvement, export, and deletion controls for the exact product you are using. Even protective settings do not make unnecessary disclosure necessary.

What should I never casually type into an AI tool?
  • Passwords, PINs, authentication codes, or recovery codes
  • Social Security, passport, driver-license, or benefit numbers
  • Bank accounts, payment cards, or financial credentials
  • Full medical, legal, tax, school, or employment records
  • Children’s identifying information
  • Confidential workplace, client, patron, or customer data
  • Precise home-security, travel, or daily-routine details
  • Another person’s private information without permission
Removing a name may not be enough. Exact dates, rare conditions, small towns, relationships, and unusual events may identify a person when combined.
Can I learn with only a phone or slow internet?

Yes. The course is designed with short sections, native accordions, phone-friendly prompts, and non-device activities. A community workshop can also use printed handouts, saved screenshots, facilitator demonstrations, and offline planning.

A particular AI service may still require a strong connection or modern device. When that happens, the limitation should be named rather than treated as a learner failure.

Should children use generative AI?

The answer depends on the child’s age, the task, the product’s current terms, school or family rules, privacy practices, and the presence of informed adult guidance. Children should not be asked to enter identifying school, health, family, location, or account information into an unapproved tool.

A useful family approach is to practice together with fictional examples, compare answers with trusted sources, discuss why the system can be wrong, and preserve time for human teaching, creativity, play, and relationships.

Do I have to use AI to be “AI literate”?

No. AI literacy includes recognizing where AI appears, understanding benefits and risks, protecting information, evaluating outputs, and making an informed choice about use, limited use, or refusal.

A considered decision not to use a tool is an affirmative exercise of judgment—not a failure to keep up.
What should I do if a chatbot becomes disturbing, manipulative, or too personal?

Stop the interaction. Close the page, clear the conversation if appropriate, review saved memory or history, and speak with a trusted person if the exchange was upsetting. Nobody owes a machine continued attention.

A chatbot is not an emergency service, sole therapist, spiritual authority, or irreplaceable relationship. Urgent health or safety needs should move immediately to an appropriate human or emergency resource.

Facts, Verification, and Decisions

Important claims should be traced beyond the chatbot to the source, responsible institution, or qualified human.

How do I verify an AI answer?
  1. Break the answer into distinct factual claims.
  2. Prioritize claims that could affect safety, rights, money, or deadlines.
  3. Identify the source type that owns the question.
  4. Open the source yourself.
  5. Check whether it directly supports the claim and is current enough.
  6. Investigate who is behind an unfamiliar source.
  7. Compare independent evidence.
  8. Record what remains unresolved.

The course uses three recurring questions: Who is behind the information? What is the evidence? What do other sources say?

Can AI help with medical, legal, tax, financial, or benefits questions?

AI may help explain general terms, organize non-sensitive facts, summarize a public document, or prepare questions for a qualified person. It should not become the final authority for diagnosis, treatment, legal rights, filing deadlines, tax positions, benefits eligibility, financial transfers, or an individual professional decision.

If delay could cause harm, stop researching with the chatbot and contact the appropriate human, official source, or emergency service.
Can AI help me understand a government form or notice?

It may help explain public instructions, define terms, identify dates stated in the document, or create questions for the issuing agency. Remove private details first and ask the system to use only the supplied text.

Confirm eligibility, deadlines, required entries, appeal rights, and consequences with the responsible agency or qualified assistance program. The agency—not the chatbot—owns its current procedure.

How can I recognize an AI-assisted scam or cloned voice?

Look for behavior rather than relying only on visual or audio imperfections: urgency, secrecy, impersonation, unusual payment, requests for credentials, pressure to change communication channels, or demands to bypass a normal safeguard.

Do not trust a familiar voice or face by itself. Pause and contact the person or organization through a phone number or route you already know or locate independently. Do not use the suspicious message’s link or number as the only verification channel.

Can an AI detector prove that text, audio, or an image was generated by AI?

No detector should be treated as conclusive proof by itself. Detector performance varies by model, medium, editing, language, and whether the detector has seen similar generated material. False positives and false negatives can both occur.

Use detection as one clue. Check provenance, original files, timestamps, independent reporting, known contact channels, and the behavior or request connected to the content.

What does meaningful human review mean?

A person should have enough knowledge, access to relevant evidence, adequate time, and real authority to question, correct, reject, override, or escalate the AI output. A quick glance or automatic approval is not meaningful oversight.

The final record should make clear what the AI assisted with, what evidence was used, who made the decision, and how an error can be corrected.

Category 04

Work, Creativity, and Copyright

Use AI to assist bounded tasks. Do not let a draft invent your life, erase another creator, or silently become a public claim.

Will AI replace my job?

No single forecast can tell one worker exactly what will happen. Jobs contain many tasks, and exposure to AI is not the same as complete replacement. Some tasks may be automated, accelerated, reorganized, or newly reviewed; other tasks may become more valuable because they require trust, judgment, care, physical presence, or local knowledge.

A 2025 ILO–NASK global index concluded that transformation was more likely than full replacement for many exposed occupations. Effects will still be uneven across industries, communities, workers, management choices, and public policy.

Can AI help with a résumé or interview?

Yes, it may help organize actual experience, compare a résumé with a public job announcement, rewrite a bullet for clarity, or practice interview questions.

Do not let it invent degrees, certifications, dates, job titles, duties, accomplishments, references, or measurable results. Read every final sentence and accept responsibility before submitting it.
Can farms, small businesses, and nonprofits benefit from AI?

Possible bounded uses include drafting public communication, organizing notes, creating a first checklist, practicing customer questions, summarizing supplied public guidance, or preparing questions for an accountant, Extension agent, attorney, insurer, lender, technician, or other professional.

Do not enter customer records, payment information, employee files, trade secrets, proprietary data, or confidential contracts into an unapproved service. Local conditions and current professional guidance remain primary.

Can I publish writing or art that AI helped create?

Possibly, but authorship, disclosure, platform rules, licenses, source material, contracts, and copyright questions may all matter. Keep records of your human contribution, editing, selection, arrangement, and source permissions.

In the United States, the Copyright Office has stated that AI assistance does not automatically prevent copyright protection, but purely AI-generated material is not protected merely because a person supplied prompts. Sufficient human-authored expressive contribution matters. This is general education, not legal advice.

Review the current U.S. Copyright Office AI study before making an important decision.

Is using AI plagiarism?

Not automatically. Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own without appropriate acknowledgment. AI use can still become dishonest when it conceals prohibited assistance, copies protected expression, invents citations, fabricates experience, or violates a school, employer, publisher, contest, grant, or client rule.

Check the applicable policy before using AI. Disclose assistance when required. Verify citations and quotations. Preserve your own judgment and contribution.

Does AI have environmental costs?

AI systems can require electricity, cooling, water, hardware, data-center construction, networking, and eventual equipment disposal. The impact varies greatly by model size, task, infrastructure, location, energy source, usage pattern, and whether a smaller tool could do the job.

A practical sufficiency rule is to use the least resource- intensive tool that responsibly performs the task, avoid generating unnecessary output, and count review and correction costs when deciding whether the tool created a real efficiency gain.

About the UVLM Program

AI Without the Hype is a developing public-education program, not a finished credential or a product endorsement.

Is the online beginner course free?

Yes. The self-guided web course and current web-based resources are available without charge. UVLM may later publish additional files, workshops, or partner arrangements with separate cost postures.

A workshop inquiry does not promise a free event, a paid event, funding, or a scheduled date. Any costs or responsibilities must be discussed before commitment and disclosed before registration.

Is this a sales presentation for a particular AI company?

No. The course is platform-neutral. Demonstrations may use a particular product, but the skills—privacy, CARES prompting, verification, scam recognition, bounded use, and human review— are designed to transfer across tools.

Is the program political or religious?

The public beginner program is nonpartisan and does not require a religious, spiritual, atheistic, or metaphysical conclusion. Participants may bring different values and beliefs while still learning practical safety and information-evaluation skills.

The curriculum does discuss power, privacy, labor, access, accountability, and public good because those are real dimensions of technology use. Claims should remain open to evidence, explanation, disagreement, and correction.

What is CARES prompting?

CARES is UVLM’s beginner prompt scaffold:

  • Context: What is happening?
  • Ask: What specific action should the system perform?
  • Requirements: What should a useful answer look like?
  • Evidence: What sources or supplied material should it use?
  • Safety: What stays private and human-led?

It is an educational structure, not a magic formula or guarantee.

What does “helpful and honest” mean?

“Helpful” asks whether the answer fits the person’s actual goal, reading level, context, access, time, and constraints. “Honest” asks whether the answer makes its evidence, assumptions, uncertainty, limits, and human-handoff points visible.

UVLM uses this as the public translation of its Empathy × Transparency educational lens. It is not presented as a universal scientific measurement of consciousness, truth, or human worth.

Are GUFT and the CoherenceLattice established scientific consensus?

No. They are UVLM-developed interdisciplinary frameworks and research proposals. The public course uses selected concepts as educational scaffolds—for example, pairing responsiveness with traceability, making evidence requirements explicit, and asking whether efficiency merely shifts burden elsewhere.

Domain-specific science, professional standards, official guidance, and primary evidence remain controlling within their fields. UVLM’s framework should be labeled, testable, revisable, and prevented from becoming a mystical or universal substitute for them.

Is the course accessible?

The web design uses headings, native accordions, keyboard- accessible controls, responsive layouts, reduced-motion support, and plain-language structure. The curriculum also supports observation, partners, printed examples, one-step instructions, and non-account participation.

Accessibility is never “finished.” Report a barrier so UVLM can investigate and repair it.

Does the course provide a certificate or professional credential?

Not currently. Completing the web course is a self-guided learning activity. It is not a license, professional certification, college credit, legal qualification, or proof of competence for high-impact AI work.

How can a library or community organization host a workshop?
